Being left/right leaning is not the same as towing the party line.

Except with the minority, the NDP got a few of their platform issues through.

Love this so much. I've been thinking of trying to represent my notes in a way like this where categories of material are "stored together" not in folders, but "physical" items that represent the category like a globe for travel notes or a bookshelves of movie reviews etc.

> their margins have increased significantly over the last few years too.

Empire (Sobeys et al) has seen consistent profit margin of ~2% for the last 2 decades.

Loblaws and Metro have higher profit margins at ~3-4% attributable largely to their acquisition of pharmacy brands which function as high margin grocer/convenience storefronts.

I think it's interesting that you gave the Pitt as an example because I feel like in that show they put so much effort into maintaining and even explaining the importance of a lot of PC ideas. But maybe that's your point? The characters make mistakes, they can be crass, they can say the wrong thing, but it's not a character flaw and writing them off, instead it's a conversation with the goal of doing a good job and working better with people while also leaving space to express stress.

Seems to be jurisdiction based, but I had always thought "volunteer" was more of a historic term and they're more like casual on-call firefighters and get paid for each call they take. But some are truly uncompensated. That's a shame, but also incredible of those people to do such important work just for the good of their community.

Pretty unbelievable how much the near urban wild life managed to actually recover during covid lockdowns.

> and the policies need to be designed such that the woman has to be back at work for at least some of the paternity leave, it can't all be used concurrently.

Not sure how to apply a legal framework, but in my area this is often enforced by the lack of daycare options for <2yos (the threshold might be lower, but about that much).

Very rare to see parents around me take their parental leave at the same time bc they'd be risking still being on a waitlist when they're done.

I haven't read into them much, (so maybe I shouldn't be repeating it here;) but there are studies about how even when women are the higher earners in relationships, they end up taking on a greater share of household management and maintenance work. (The rhetorical context is usually around why young women aren't as interested in dating.... But again, that's something I'm throwing out there w/o due diligence)

But the idea of having physical cards that you split up and assign does sound really helpful. I might look into that. I would say in my experience breaking out household chores even amongst roommates, some tasks that seem even aren't remotely so once you get into it (I have been the advantaged and disadvantaged party in different apartments) and some are simply different such that some are trivial for one person and not so for another person. But that's a part of dealing the cards, even when splitting evenly. (now I'm wondering if I can see where people are getting into arguments.... ^_^')

> I don't mean to vilify them, I think it's just a matter of fact that if you habitually poke 100 holes in any idea, both your own and others, you will do the very safe thing.

I always find it so interesting that the same principle can lead to many conclusions. Based on the people I know and my own life, I would have argued the opposite. The people who do not attempt to poke holes in every idea are those that just go with the "default", "safe" option. They have not meaningfully evaluated any options and simply taken face value where the default seems less complex and therefore the lowest risk/highest value (I.e, safe) option.

Yeah, the boreal forests super rural/unpopulated bc they're mostly up north and on the shield where it's hard to build. That's said, there is quite a bit of logging lands where the age, arrangement and species makeup think we have fires more often than they're supposed to happen.

That's something to note : Jack pine which is fire adapted doesn't mature for a pretty long time. The boreal forest is meant to have massive powerful forest fires that clear stands completely but they're supposed to happen on a timeline of like 80+ years.

I'm not as plugged in as I used to be, but I recall some folks worried about more birch taking up space up north bc of how often burns were happening and birch loves to form massive stands when the floor clears.

Mountain pine beetles are more of a BC issue. They don't really exist in Ontario. There are native beetles that target eastern white and red pine, but not with such massive pine die offs.

I recall sometime last year they were looking at being able to categorize 3 broad subcategories of autism that likely have separate causes and different levels of disability and symptoms. Depending on how true that is, it's possible we can isolate the axies of traits that are debilitating.
