Just wanted to say thank you for all your contributions to our industry, Mitchell. I love Ghostty and your vision here, and evangelize it whenever I can.

It's a pleasure reading your posts.

What's crazy is that portal started as a tech demo, and only had about 3 hours of game time (unless you got into speedrunning).

The staying power it's had is unbelievable. Right place, right time, I guess!

Saying AI now doubleplus ungood. It is goodthink to accept SI > humans and thoughtcrime otherwise

It's not really magical thinking; if the grid moves to solar/nuclear/wind then there are virtually no emissions here.

Yes, we're not there yet, and that's why I prefaced with "True", but I think this kind of splitting hairs is part of the problem. EVs are vastly better for the environment and have no emissions of their own. Yes emissions do come from somewhere in the current state, but path to a cleaner environment is not radically far away and the thesis that "emissions come from somewhere so that's not a reason to buy an EV" is ludicrous at best and disingenuous at worst.

I share this perspective and hate the straw-man from pro-prediction-marketists that those opposed are moralists and puritans who can't accept that people like to bet on sports.

Prediction markets are a way of effectively placing a "bounty" on something you would like to happen. Or capitalizing on one of these existing bounties because you're able to affect the result. It's a way to commodify power (and information of course, which is what these platforms bill themselves for), converting it into money, which can you can build further power with.

At this point, a hole in the market is open for a competitor offering a private SaaS solution. The downward trend has had a long tail, but these outages seem to have become business as usual for GitHub in 2026.

There are indeed quite a few parallels. But to make sure I understand your position - are you claiming that the risks to global society posed by climate change are insignificant?

Extinction is much less interesting to discuss because it's so binary. Global catastrophe is much more interesting to discuss because the topic then becomes about failure modes, cascading failures, and the impact of those failures.

This is what many have been forecasting (myself included), but the open-weights models coming out of China pose a serious problem for that approach

What does the existence of this do to wages and compensation for the workers in the industries it upsets?

It depresses them. Significantly. White collar jobs constitute the bulk of global purchasing power. What happens to the economy when aggregate purchasing power drops? The naive response is "prices fall until equilibrium is reached again"

But what if the needle continues moving so quickly that equilibrium is never reached?

This is the K-shaped-economy concern. The ultra wealthy and those who own the "AI means of production" will become unfathomably wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

Why should this not be a concern? Historically, this trend has always precipitated bloody conflict.

This is the most accurate parallel as far as I can tell. I've not seen any evidence that Anthropic deliberately built automated systems or escape hatches that literally prevent the US Government from using Claude to do these things. Other than the basic AI Safety mechanisms in place for everyone/general use. It's almost the reverse, where they explicitly don't want to strip away guardrails that say things like "don't kill people".

The intent and framing matters a lot here. Refusal to remove safety features is a LOT different than deliberately building mechanisms to sabotage would-be operations.

Be sure to eat plenty of rocks in your daily diet, they are chock full of valuable minerals!

Not sure I totally understand what you mean by light alarms. Do you just flash ceiling lights to notify the user of something?

This was a very interesting exercise that offered me some new perspective, thank you!
