Surely it's easy to verify by simply doing Benchmark tests every 2 or 3 days but not publishing them so they can't be gamed, then releasing all at once?

Now you've made me think the bestiality thing is just to hide this. A history of animal abuse is a _strong_ indicator.

This seems specific to western europe, so I'm curious how a country like Australia would fit into this study? Significantly higher immigration, but also lower Far-Right voting(I know, I know, PHON, but while they've always been around, they've never been as prominent as very recently, and it feels entirely inorganic. They're also not doing nearly as well as the AFD, Le Pen, or Reform).

I'd be far more curious about the correlation between consumption of various social media platforms and Far-Right voting...

Well, hopefully something changes in the App Store space. It's quite unusable for discovery, there's no ability to filter apps for free/pay once/no iAP/no recurring subscriptions/no adverts.

The lack of filters combined with allowing slop means for example, it's impossible to find a paint by numbers app because when you search in the app store, it's 100+ clones that all charge $5 weekly OR have the most obnoxious adverts imaginable making it unplayable for people who aren't very technical. I'd have paid a straight $10 or $15 depending on the app, but if there is one with a single payment it's impossible to find.

Combined, the app store is unusable unless you already know exactly what app you want to install.

They've also made it harder to go to content in that catalog. You used to be able to get to the sidebar relatively easily, even if you'd swiped right a dozen times, by just going up|down, then left. then you were at the menu and about 2 clicks away from search.

Now? Now the search bar is at the top. If you've scrolled down through categories while looking for something, then decided to just use search, or to just look in movies or shows, you now gotta scroll up & up & up.

I could only read the blurb, but this stood out to me: "To survey 1500 Americans".

Is that really enough to get a representative sample across 340 million people? Also, with tech as it is, why is that the best they can do?

I'd have assumed it was AUD, and even then it's high. I pay 0.28/kWh AUD in Sydney. That'd be 0.2/kWh USD.

If you have no connection with them, then you haven't signed anything indemnifying them for their actions with your data, so do you have grounds to sue for damages?

I came here to say almost the same thing. I've been learning rust in my free time because I don't do enough programming at work to scratch that itch any more, and I've been using the rust book as a reference.

Thanks for the rec for "rust for rustaceans" I'll have a look into it.

I've only been using chatgpt for points where i'd normally go ask another dev for another set of eyes to debug something, otherwise all my learning and doing has been mostly the rust book, crates, and blogs about rust, ecs, roguelikes etc etc. It's been so fun!

This article made me think of public bathrooms in the UK, which, despite having to pay to enter, are some of the most disgusting public bathrooms I've seen.

I like the idea of the throne public bathrooms. Not requiring payment, but identification instead. I wonder if you just enter your phone number, or if they text you a code you have to enter to verify that it's your phone number?

This also feels like the sort of problem the Chinese social credit system is meant to solve. With cameras everywhere & facial/gait recognition, they can identify people anywhere in public, and punish bad behaviour below the level of crime.

I also remember the UK years had a psychologist change the wording/structure of some tax forms to increase % of on time payments, and it worked so well they set up a department to do it in other areas of govt. I wonder what happened with that...

Anyway, it's an interesting problem space.

"Conflicting Signals".

I don't even mean to be political, but one of the two parties here is notorious for lying, so much so that there's a wikipedia page dedicated to the falsehoods they have come out with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_or_misleading_statements...

First line:

> During and between his terms as President of the United States, Donald Trump has made tens of thousands of false or misleading claims

To have a productive discussion on HN, I'd like to ask a question I've always wondered about the USA: How come, given how the media represents things, there haven't been any new media companies, no new news shows, no new newspapers/websites, dedicated to honest, factual reporting, that have gone mainstream/nationwide?

Is there something preventing this?

Will some(most? a few?) state govts start publishing all the same data just for their own state?

I wonder if this will become a competitive advantage? States that publish nothing will get less FDI or local investment because the risks are harder to calculate?

Actually, will this affect different types of insurance?

It's such an insane problem for a developed nation to have, has anyone given serious thought to the long-term affects of this?

Not OP, but I think they still have the lead in hardware. However, I'm using an iPhone 14 which apparently released 4 years ago now, and it's still plenty fast enough for all my needs. If it lasts another 4 years, I won't update. That's probably their problem.

Do I think the software ecosystem is superior? I _hate_ using the app store with a passion. I _hate_ trying to find an app for my needs(most recently a gym app) and there's 40 options and they're all a monthly subscription. I _hate_ the advertising that my children get trapped in while playing a game(I sometimes have to switch to data so that my pihole isn't used so that the ads can load so that the game will work at all), but the ads don't have a timer or an X in the top right, you have to interact with them the right way to escape.

But most of all, I _HATE_ that all my daughter wants is a draw-by-numbers game and there's literally hundreds of almost identical games which all charge $10+ a MONTH for the privilege.

Nah, I don't think the software ecosystem is superior. Although Google trying to stop sideloading does make me think they're happy racing to the goddamn bottom.

+ ghostery + pihole.

I like his suggestion of VPN via cloud. I might set up something with wireguard or tailscale for that.

I don't really use youtube, but my family does, so If anyone knows a way to get a better ui experience as a google tv app I'd be keen to hear it?
