Oh man, you're giving me flashbacks to a vibe coded utter mess. Gets were a big offender. It seemed to have no discipline to commit to a data format, added all kinds of optional parameters everywhere, was also doing truly insane things like having contingency fallbacks in case some library it wanted to import wasn't where it expected, sometimes even importing things in the middle of a function.

I don't think it needs to be nearly that much food.

A single bowl of oatmeal with chia seeds gets you about halfway there. 2-3 tbsp of chia seeds has ~10-15g of fiber, mostly soluble fiber. Soluble is what you want for lowering cholesterol because it binds to bile acid, which means your liver has to use cholesterol from your body to make more bile. The oatmeal adds another ~4-5g and is largely soluble too.

After that you don't have far to go. Besides lentils and many beans, whole grains are really fiber dense, e.g., having wheat bread on a sandwich can get you another +6 just from the bread. Brown rice instead of white gets you 3-4 more. Weird grains like barley and bulgur have a bunch and go well in things like casseroles, chilis, etc. You'll also get at least some from whatever fruits/veggies you were going to eat anyway.

It's important to investigate and understand what happened.

I'd also like to see any similar level of scrutiny applied to the liars that pretended this wasn't our fault afterward, and the media who amplified their lies.

It's good pushback and you're right to call that out.

I think consolidation and centralized control are coming fast. Already some models are "too dangerous" to let everyone use, competition from open-weight models are being targeted as "lacking safety," distillation is under attack as "cheating," opting out of data sharing is now an enterprise-only feature, etc.

"Give it out for free or serve for peanuts" is doing a lot of work here. The crowd should be skeptical that this will continue given how many times we have seen enshittification unfold before.

Before LLMs, "knowledge should be free" was a call to preserve an open playing field where everyone has the ability to access the intellectual labor of humanity so they can contribute, instead of letting a few institutions wall it off for a profit.

As knowledge is walled off behind these models, rent seeking will expand, "safety guardrails" will become more onerous, and the masses will lose their access. There are wonderful parallels between this and enclosure in Britain.

I think banning oil exports would never happen since oil shareholders would scream, but why would it be evil?

Really good question. For instance, TX is a one-party consent state. If the TV is recording what's happening in the living room with nobody's knowledge, that seems like a very clear violation of "one party in the conversation needs to know it's being recorded." IANAL

"One day, NPCs will wake up and give a fuck about other people and the environments that allow for the NPC life to begin with."

Optimistic take. The PCs are very good at convincing the NPCs that nothing they do can matter. Keep 'em poor, keep 'em sick, keep 'em stupid, control the women and all that.

In programming certain word choices are valuable in this way. It's sad that pairs like true/false, good/bad, first/rest, and left/right are unequal length. But there are nice pairs like old/new, head/tail, fast/slow, same/diff, and right/wrong, which can help with create natural vertical alignment throughout a function.

"if you have a software system that contains two different implementations of IDNA 2003 processing user input"

Is that a real thing though? Is someone doing that?

"Wheelhouse is about 600k lines of code and tests (mostly bash)"

This article is a joke right? Please tell me you are joking. Jesus christ.

Yes, I feel like you can just sense the garbage coming. Age/identity verification, mandatory data sharing, morality policing, "Answer Engine Optimization" ads and influence peddling... it's going to be so painful to watch it all enshittify.

It's really crazy. If 2/3 of us don't have privacy rights then what are we even doing.

That doesn't seem true at all? I tell Claude what NOT to do all the time and it seems to work?

I think it very much depends on the domain. For instance, I've seen specs for floating point ops that were 1-3 pages compared to 30,000 lines of RTL. That holds pretty well for many other cases. For example, a properties like decompress(compress(x)) = x are beautifully simple compared to the details of the algorithms, and are pretty compelling correctness evidence.
