I do love that from a 15$ Casio to a 15k one, the community loves them all.

You can get a 40$ watch that has radio accurate time keeping!

This looks like full blown criminal negligence on Microsoft's part. Charges should be filed.

But that's a fantasy.

No one will face any consequences whatsoever. Retraining staff and migrating to a new cloud provider is very expensive.

Personally I think Gov should run its own cloud , as in from the data center level up. Don't depend on consultants, actually hire full time federal employees to do this.

Won't ever happen though. No way to grease palms without contractors in the mix

I have FOMO from screwing up a final round Meta interview right before the stock surged.

I’d be retired now.

I’d be living in a functional country with much lower crime and better food.

My biggest career regret is not leetcoding more.

>Perhaps I am missing something, what are you imagining of “a locally ran inference engine” that doesn’t already exist in a DGX workstation, Framework desktop, MacBook, etc?

Someone much smarter than me would figure this out.

One option would be an alternative bare metal OS which could allocate ram more carefully.

I'm sure with billions upon billions in VC funding a solution could be found.

The thing is, would the top AI minds rather charge end users 40 to 300$ a month for AI usage of sell a 100$ a year license to run it locally.

I'm far from an expert, but I don't think it's impossible. Future models won't give out vacation ideas, they'll focus on one or two things. This might allow us to get the size down.

Someone can always optimize a model down to running on a typical 32 GB M6 or M5 Mac.

It doesn't need to be the best. It just needs to be good enough. I'm not smart enough, but if I was I'd be working on a locally ran interface engine. That's where you charge say 100$ a year. Said engine would allow you to use a large open source model locally to the point where it's good enough to rival Haiku.

If I had to guess someone is working on this

Edit: Illinois actually goes up to around 850 if you have children and starts at 628$, my mistake

I’ve found trying to contribute to FOSS to have all the stress of work with none of the pay.

I’ll jam with my friends, make a game in a weekend, but I have no interest in dealing with the egos of big FOSS projects.

However, I am seeing vibe coding create a new type of community. In the music space you have tons of people vibe coding new OSes for music hardware.

Akai has even promised to officially support custom firmware on the MPC Sample Keys! Custom firmware has existed for decades, but maybe a tiny handful of people could make it. Now just about everyone can!

I don’t think theirs any possible way Social Security or other New Deal programs could be enacted today.

Although it can be argued this should be handled state by state instead. Unemployment pays about 1k per week in Washington , but only 400$ a week in Illinois.

My big fear is a right leaning federal government will eventually dismantle the social safety net entirely. If not that expect rent seeking, ie paying fees to private companies to get your social security checks

I’m trying to agree with you, the strange attitude is being anti instacart

At a certain point you realize both parties ultimately serve the super rich. The DNC would rather have Republicans in office over electing real progressives.

If you look outside the US Bernie is actually a moderate. We're not talking about abolishing money or seizing the means of production. Just maybe, somewhere between minting a new trillionaire every year and pregnant women sleeping outside we can find a compromise.

Unlimited money for wars all over the planet, but if you lose your job and have a chronic illness you're screwed most of the time.

Sometimes your screwed even if you have a job and good health insurance. It's a magic game of musical chairs to see what's covered or not. What's out of pocket , etc.

Only the lucky get old.

Anyway what a strange attitude to have on a tech forum. Why do we need HN, let's discuss this over a game of bowling!

I had a co worker who was deaf.

Luckily he came of age just as texting took off. I guess in theory he could of relied upon a translator to make phone calls for him, but his life was much improved by modern communication.

Even if new technology makes things easier for 99% of people who are lazy, but is essential for that last 1%, it's a net positive.

Consolidation in this industry is horrible for everyone. Less competition means higher prices and lower pay.
