I too find this to be a hostile action against the user. It's my computer.

I'd like the option to disable checking for updates back, please.

So open source is generic, and personalized interfaces are profitable. Well then. I guess now is a really good time to be running an app store.

I like small phones. Wife has a 6" screen and would probably go bigger though. She didn't think a 5.5 was big enough.

The problem can be anywhere downstream of the can. After a vacation, I pulled 12 out of a cleanout T in my yard from a house-sitter we won't be using again...

I run KVM VMs on devuan and could not be happier. (flame backspaced out, you're welcome...)

Perhaps modern life allows the issues to be explored honestly and openly, and that makes you uncomfortable.

Surf is great if you want one very slim browser for reading and some other fat browser for webapps. I've been really impressed how much more advanced surf is compared to dillo.

Yeah, I occasionally connect a linux laptop on both networks (ipforwarding OFF) with an http port open that exposes my fileserver mounted on the laptop via NFS. If that's too hard, I just pull the hard drives out and connect to my workstation with USB, also good for imaging the machines since they crash so dang often.

Sure, but my XP and 98 boxes are not on a WAN connected network.

Or, preferably, simply seen as a childish use of rockets and nuclear energy while the tech is being used productively elsewhere.

There's also a disposable culture around the resources involved. A mentor of mine always says "You can have it, but if you break it then you get to keep both pieces". Without value in the broken pieces, no one needs to clean up their own messes anymore, so there's no need to move carefully or fail gracefully. If you trash your dev env, or even your workstation, it's trivial to roll back or redeploy and get back to work. Management is in on it too. Rather than hire more careful devs, it's easier to just move the explosions farther away from prod, and limit the blast radius. CI/CD

You are comparing a force for good in the world to pushing sugar water. Sugar water OBVIOUSLY depends heavily on branding and advertising. Things that are more substantive can and should stand on their own merits.

I would much prefer them to stay small, tight, and focused.

Yeah, no kidding. I donated (a few times actually) to cover hosting costs, not to make wikipedia into some kind of lifestyle brand. This is wasteful.
