Old geezer. Was a teacher not an IT person or 'developer'.

I noticed that according to the article the re-interviews were cancelled after a meeting of the board (which includes some pretty notable people).

I gather that the current CEO holds a majority of the shares. Is he susceptible at all to wiser counsel?

> "Her team's findings have prompted German health insurance companies – who, among others, initially funded the research project – to invest in setting up bird feeders and viewing areas in more than 400 nursing homes across Bavaria. "It was so effective, it just economised money," Kals says."

Perhaps we need to provide opportunities for less well off people to access nature? It might have a positive cost-benefit. And design care homes around gardens? 'forest bathing' is apparently often recommended in Japan based on studies of blood pressure and other physical indicators.

Munlochy: if you ever saw a geezer wearing an ex-army parka, builders safety boots with Opticron bins it might have been me. I don't get up there often enough to warrant the pricey stuff.

Physicists use LaTeX and less often plain TeX a lot as you say because of writing papers. I think that the basic LaTeX book document style provides a workable set of features, and that lets the author just focus on the content. I'd imagine that commercial publishers e.g. OUP would redefine the basic macros to produce output in their house style.

The speculation about future evolution of bacteria that can digest plastic by using similar enzymes was thought provoking. The actual paper is open access as well and the 'extended pdf' has introductory material that I found interesting.

Looks like they combined Maths and CS into one school

https://le.ac.uk/computing-and-mathematical-sciences

The course offer looks to be mainly applications, which does tend to fit the profile of this particular university in the UK. The staff list looks to be roughly balanced between mathematical sciences and CS.

https://le.ac.uk/computing-and-mathematical-sciences/people/.... Totally random professor (in UK professor is a job description and very senior)

https://le.ac.uk/people/sergei-petrovskii

He does ecological modelling. One paper that caught my very superficial eye

https://chaos1.la.asu.edu/~yclai/papers/PLR_2020_MACFGHLPSZ_...

So to answer your question: going strong, mostly applications.

Use of the passive voice is a giveaway. People seem to write as if these are large corporate projects with managers and all, not volunteer driven.

London is a very old city. One of the Wren churches has a crypt from an earlier church, so 21st Century, then into 17th century then down to something like 13th century. Another staircase down under that and you are standing in a Roman structure.

Oxford: On the main road through the centre is an old tower, the Carfax Tower, 11th century so 900 years old. You can sit in the churchyard outside that tower and have a coffee and pastry. People have been stopping for a while outside that tower for a long time. It is nice on a sunny day towards evening when the warmth of the stones staves off the chill from the rivers.

Chester: Pop into Superdrug on Northgate Street for toothpaste. Medieval chapel, wool exchange, theatre and music hall. Dickens did a reading there.

What qualities do the recruiters at OpenAI value in the mathematics and physics graduates that they hire?

And how do you see these qualities changing over, say, the next decade?

Just wondering if MacOS people have looked at Eastgate Systems' Tinderbox application? I was a happy user back just after the Millennium.

(For me on Linux it is a directory full of text files with markdown and sometimes a groff pic diagram or even a metapost diagram (just starting with that one))

What grounds would you have for putting a tariff a specific contract between two parties? Is it not the case that tariffs need to apply to categories of trade and to countries?

"I think the government should probably tax the diff in salary in those cases"

How would that work if the remote people were employed by a different company that was given a contract by the home company to provide certain pieces of software or specific computing services?

T.I.L. about photopea, and I have disabled Ublock Origin for the site. I see a static 'slide show' column of non-video adverts on the right hand side of the screen - about 10% of screen width.

Best of luck with the copyright complaint.
