I'm not disagreeing with the other things you said. But there are a few reasons I believe companies want to keep salary information private:

1. They want to get top talent at a cheap price, this is understandable because lets face it all of us want to get the best deal they can.

2. They want to avoid a hostile work environment where people are pissed off because they don't feel Jeff in sales should earn so much.

Those are the only two reasons I can think of that can be legitimate.
