Ask HN: How big does an open-source project need to be for a lifestyle business?
Specifically, about how many "stars" on Github would such an open source project need to start realistically thinking about turning it into a lifestyle business, since GH stars are probably the most prominent quantitative indicator I know of in this area.
I've got an open source project that has grown fast with relatively little promotion. I know that a good number of companies are using it in production. I also know of a good way to monetize it, while keeping the existing software exactly like it is (not "open core" but somewhat related).
Is this a pipe dream, or do I have a realistic chance into making this a lifestyle business that -- with hard work -- can start providing a reasonable income (say $100,000/yr) within a year or two?
