Ask HN: How do you get good domain names?

I'm just curious to know how do HN folks get their domain names for their apps/products/hacks?

Do you guys look for a domain name and choose the brand name? or go for the brand name and purchase a good domain name?

What if a .com domain name is not available? Would you rather prefer an alternative domain extention?
