All those if statements inside loops... would be a lot cleaner (and faster!) to just use a single goto statement:

  goto cont;

  for (; ; ++z)
    for (; x <= z; ++x)
      for (; y <= z; ++y) {
        if (x*x + y*y == z*z) return *this;
  cont:
      }
