My recommendation would be to compile a Lisp. See: http://scheme2006.cs.uchicago.edu/11-ghuloum.pdf. Easy to follow tutorial for compiling Scheme to x86.

This advice is especially true if you think syntax and parsing are the boring parts of writing a compiler.
