Wolfram Alpha will fail for the same reason that Microsoft failed at search.

Microsoft tried to compete with Google by coming up with really good results for the most common queries. This strategy was not effective.

Wolfram Alpha is trying to do the same -- trying to give really good answers/computations for common sorts of queries.

Users expect reasonable answers for all queries.
