I sympathize with what he is going through, because career in tech has taken such a downturn. My recommendation is that since he has a car, he can do gig work (Doordash / UberEats / Walmart Spark) and easily make $2k/month for his rent and survive in the meantime. Most full-time gig workers make $4000+ per month.
