On compression ratio the two are neck and neck, and BWTSorter is narrowly ahead when both use the same block size. bzip3 is about five times faster. I built bzip3 1.5.5 from its GitHub source and ran it single-threaded on the same Silesia files as before.
No, it does not use any of BZip3's code.
