They kind of already are: ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Claude Code, Codex, bots, their plugins for other apps, etc.
Some things to consider:
- There is only so much attention, compute, and talent a company can devote.
- The labs' API analytics already see which use cases are worth entering. That's what happened with coding and bots.
- If a lab launches a product, every company building on its tech becomes a rival. Competing with your own customers is costly.
- Succeeding in other verticals, like healthcare, finance, and even tech takes domain expertise, regulatory work, sales relationships, integrations with legacy systems, etc etc.
I think your point is solid, but prices usually fall for the older models -- or at least older capabilities. But the frontier models still earn premiums.
I think their lasting value is in owning (in a ~duopoly) the customer, their proprietary data and their workflows.
Edit: grammar
