Some very long time ago, in the early 00s, I read some UX study about icons. Ppl there replaced regular icons in app like MS word with random shapes, red square, blue circle, purple triangle, etc, and found out, that after initial learning period people find these icons just as fast as more meaningful ones. Recently, I tried finding that material, but couldn't find it. Still, it matches my experience with icons.
