I'm a bit further on the same path (4 year old). Here's what I've come up with:
competence is what I try to teach. Try, try and try again until he'll get it. Small things at first, but (hopefully) he gets the principle. Legos are great at this.
Additionally I try to teach that it's not wrong to defend yourself.
