Mathematicians usually care nothing about application of their work. Working on interesting problems is their only motivation. Practical applications are almost always happy accidents.
This goes back to the hope that robots would do the laundry and the dishes and the cleaning up so we could write and play music, create art, and solve mathematical problems.
Instead the AIs are doing all of that leaving humans with only the dishes and the laundry and the cleaning up.
