You don't have to do it though. There is no reward, no achievement, nothing unlocks. It's functionally equivalent to "if you stand in one spot for an hour a special sound effect plays and some lights flash for 2 seconds." I think it's psychologically interesting how many people get angry that this sound effect is programmed into the game.
