For me, it's because it feels like a dick move when they're being paid less because tips are an expected part of their wages. If we fix that, I'll absolutely throw a fit about being asked for a tip from that point onward in the states.
I live in Spain now, and I don't tip anyone and no one asks me for a tip. Except for one coffee place that you could tell was run by Americans, they had the "enter your tip" kiosk terminal which I NEVER see in Spain. I put 0%. That's not a precedent I want to see start here.
