Interestingly, it wasn't designed to deal with case, but to select whether to resolve symbolic links:

    $ cd /tmp
    $ mkdir a
    $ ln -s a b
    $ cd b
    $ pwd && pwd -P
    /tmp/b
    /tmp/a
