Currently Mermaid doesn't support manual positioning — the layout is algorithmic (Sugiyama-style for flowcharts). Some workarounds:
- Use subgraph blocks to cluster related nodes
- Adjust edge order in source to influence layout
- D2 (another diagram language) has better manual positioning
