In Elixir this would be written as:

  db.getUsers()
  |> getExpiredUsers(Date.now())
  |> generateExpiryEmails()
  |> email.bulkSend()

I think Elixir hits the nail on the head when it comes to finding the right balance between functional and imperative style code.
