The “Better Offline” podcast has been warning that this was coming for months now. It’s incredible to me that AI evangelists have managed to focus the entire conversation on LLM “usefulness” without even mentioning costs. It allows them to play a game of smoke and mirrors where no one actually knows the true cost of an API call and there is no predictable cost model. Most AI companies can be safely assumed to be running at a loss and if they can’t figure out how to make these models a lot more efficient, dreams of replacing software engineers will face the same reality as dreams of self driving semi trucks.
