Combining engineering teams of very similar products will inevitably lead to consolidation. The key leaders of these teams will leave. The open source projects will starve. No customers will start a new project with these products when it's obvious they won't exist in a few years. Red Hat just lost all of its advantage in selling services for existing customers if these products now belong to a different company.
