I've been seeing a lot of this stuff in the past few days, and while it seems to comport with the reality we're witnessing, both have taken me by surprise. In some way, I wish I'd heard some sort of warning about this. And I'm someone who follows a vast amount of news and has been a SWE in the industry for 25+ years. Yes, I knew that Musk and Thiel wanted to colonize mars and seastead and all that. Good for them. I wasn't really aware that they subscribed to an ideology ("Yarvin"? Who?) that prescribed turning America into a bunch of militarily guarded exclaves a-la Snow Crash. I certainly wasn't prepared for what Musk is attempting to do to our systems now.
That being said: Is there not something slightly overblown about this blowing up the way it has in the past few days? It feels a lot like a narrative, one of many that exaggerates the events taking place and frames them as a coup. Maybe it is a coup. I'm just too far in a bubble of people screaming that it's a coup to know whether it is or whether it's just a realignment typical of a major handover of power.
