Ask HN: How to help open sources improve their UX?

I have some students I am teaching design. I want them to work on some real-world projects and not redesign interfaces without having a feedback loop telling how they did. I can't give them access to my client work.

Is there a way to find out open source projects that want someone to help with their User Experience?
