Worked as a front-end engineer from 2018 to 2020 but quit due to boredom and burnout. Ever since then I have just been doing bar work with some cheap backpacking trips in between. Now that I'm getting towards 30 it's time to sort out a proper career for myself, but I'm not sure if there's any good options outside of tech.
I have a degree in computer science and am a reasonably good programmer, but I find I don't really have the passion or conscientiousness to keep up with the treadmill of new technologies. I don't really enjoy having to learn new things for the sake of it.
What would you do in my situation? Have another go at software engineering or try to pivot into adjacent roles in tech?
If I do return to the job market, is the large career gap a huge liability? Would it be smarter to just pretend that I'm a fresh junior developer and climb the ranks from there? Or can I sell myself as a mid-level developer for junior-level prices?
Or, given the state of the job market and the rise of AI, is it just time to bail on tech completely? Are there any decent career paths outside of tech that are easy to enter?
Appreciate any insights you can provide.
