I can understand not wanting to use a proprietary platform for communications about a FOSS project, but why does it have to be IRC? The world is moving on. I like being able to paste code into chat and have it syntax highlighted. I like being able to ping people so that they get a notification on their phone, and likewise, I like people to be able to ping me. Occasionally, I like to send a GIF.
I imagine IRC people will just call all of these distractions. They are in a shrinking minority of people.
