Genuine racists, sexists, and their sort have no greater allies than the ever-present purity inquisition among people purporting to oppose bigotry. What may have begun as efforts to reform thinking in a progressive and egalitarian manner has become the mirror image of the hate-mongering of their opponents. The difference is that the racists attack people who were never inclined to be their allies, and that's why they win elections.
