this best simple advice I've heard/given about design for non designers includes:

* Keep it simple

* Pastel colors look good and are trivial to match

* Note alignment and white space

* As pg alludes, register/login top right

* Call to Action should be green (pg says red, shrug)

* Test the words. Patrick has a pretty great A/B testing library for Mixpanel.
